ABSTRACT
This chapter explains how the urbanization of Calcutta assumed form. The concept was one of improvement, rather than planning – the approach was to meet eventualities and not to create a planned urban structure. It touches upon the phases of development from the earliest attempts to urbanize Calcutta, and talks about a host of socio-political factors that contributed to how the city took shape.
