ABSTRACT

This chapter sheds light on the geopolitics of the origin and growth of Calcutta. We have shown how under stress of geopolitics town planning in the early stages became neglected and whatever little of planning was there was essentially rudimentary. Calcutta at the early stage grew as a garrison town. Security was the first concern with the English. From trade-security to town planning, the journey was long. It did not start before the battle of Palasi.
