ABSTRACT

Home care agencies that recruit and select care workers advertise care work opportunities directly on their websites, on social media platforms, and in other job portals. Besides collaboration with recruitment firms and direct recruitment, another means of recruitment is to activate care workers’ informal networks and encourage them to recommend other care workers to the agency. Care agencies also often offer their care workers incentives to recruit other migrant women, as a member of the Respekt group reported. If a care worker recommends a friend or acquaintance and the new care worker is placed twice, the care worker who brought her to the agency receives. The motivation for live-in care work should derive not from financial interest but rather from some kind of inner urge to help the elderly. Care agencies in Switzerland without private contacts in recruitment countries find care workers by working with recruitment partners or employing former care workers to recruit more.
