ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book is designed to help develop a better understanding and appreciation of some of the factors that compel migrant women to leave their homeland and join a migrant healthcare workforce that takes them far away from their country of origin. It is also designed to put a human face to the ‘lived experience’ of internationally mobile healthcare workers, a pattern of international mobility amongst this profession that has reached unprecedented levels in terms of both size and the breadth of nations from which its constituents are drawn. The book provides an opportunity to appreciate how nurse’s agency and career mobility will vary, along with their respective ability to migrate with some measure of discretion in terms of opportunities offered in their countries of origin and destination.
