ABSTRACT

In this chapter, an overview of school-based consultation will be provided, including the need for this indirect service delivery model. We present a definition of consultation, review information regarding the role of the consultant, and discuss the contributions of different disciplines and barriers to consultation. Guidelines for training practitioners in school-based consultation will be presented, and university training approaches to teaching consultation will be reviewed. We describe the developmental model of skill development, and identify the skills that students need to adopt in order to become capable school-based consultants, including: problem-solving, techniques from diverse theoretical perspectives, leadership, interpersonal, team-functioning, application in structured and fieldwork settings, ecological, implementation science, and cultural competency. Emerging consultative models are reviewed. Finally, the case study model to teach consultation will be described, and the way in which role-playing through cases may offer valuable pre-fieldwork experiences to draw upon when first attempting to use consultative skills in a school setting.
