ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we discuss assessment considerations for consultants who engage in school-based consultation, regardless of the consultation model being utilized. The record review, interview, observation, and test – instruction, curriculum, environment, and learner (RIOT/ICEL) matrix – is presented to reinforce that consultants should consider a variety of information sources, as well as the known broad factors that influence a child’s behavior at school. Incorporating these concepts within consultation is necessary in order to understand the nature of a problem behavior to then select evidence-based interventions. In the subsequent portion of the chapter, we discuss indirect and direct assessment techniques that may be used to analyze problem behavior and progress monitor evidence-based interventions. We go on to propose consultation process integrity and treatment integrity assessment procedures that may be used to maximize consultation outcomes. Measurement of the social validity of interventions applied during the consultation process are discussed, and then the chapter ends with a review of the three common techniques to evaluate outcomes of interventions applied during consultation.
