ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we present behavioral consultation (BC) as the most researched model of consultation available to practitioners. Current research regarding conjoint behavioral consultation (CBC) will be emphasized in recognition of the importance of home-school partnerships to solve school problems and that problems that occur at school typically occur at home, as well. In order to engage consultees in the stages of behavioral consultation, consultants must possess skills related to formal entry, establishing an effective relationship, assessment, problem definition and goal-setting, intervention or strategy selection, intervention implementation, intervention evaluation, and termination. Each of these stages is reviewed. Additionally, BC processes are summarized, along with consultant roles and consultee characteristics that may influence consultation outcomes. An argument is made for conducting treatment integrity interviews and collecting treatment integrity information, given research findings that greater treatment fidelity is related to greater child outcomes.
