ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 is the third core chapter in the book that describes the most prominent lexical and grammatical features in spoken discourse. The first section of the chapter provides definitions of both lexical and grammatical features that are (or should be) included in the description of L2 speech research. The section includes features related to word frequency and lists, lexical bundles, spoken grammatical features, and functional correlates of conversational features. The second section of the chapter provides a guide to the extraction and analysis of each feature discussed in the first section. This section includes computer programs that help analyze features from one’s own corpus (e.g., AntConc) and online available spoken corpora that can be utilized to answer a research question related to lexico-grammatical analyses. The final section of the chapter provides pedagogical applications (as they relate to the L2 classroom) of the lexico-grammatical features discussed.
