ABSTRACT

‘Culture’ specifies the superordinate dimensions along which the acts of individuals are primarily construed. The personal construct psychologist would add to the view that the study of deviant groups as groups is unlikely to be a productive occupation unless one also focuses on the meaning deviance has for the individuals in such groups. One of the fundamental issues of commune life relates to the question of what purpose is the commune serving for the person, what aspect of his or her construction system does it validate. George Kelly saw the sociality corollary as providing a basis for a social psychology. To re-define such concepts as ‘prejudice’ in personal construct terms may look simply like playing the name-changing game. Personal construct psychology contends that there is a close relationship between construing and language, but also that construing can be without verbal labelling as well.
