ABSTRACT

This chapter concludes the book. It identifies four concepts that help to clarify the language, politics, and power relationship that has been described throughout—tension, paradox, irony and hiatus—, and summarises some key examples of each. It also emphasises the ways in which language is subjected to the technologies of power and language regimentation, while also being shaped through counterhegemonic activism on the part of communities at the grassroots, among youth in particular. The chapter closes by identifying two broad themes for possible future research: (i) the need to develop an ontological as well as an epistemological perspective on language policymaking and implementation; and (ii) the need to take holistic action around Indigenous language revitalisation and revalorisation, in the light of the role that these can play in well-being, both of the natural environment and of the self.
