ABSTRACT
montesquieu (Cahiers, p. 139) remarked that at one time ‘on était philosophe à bon marché’ by discussing three or four questions: ‘What is the chief good? What is the principle of all things? Is the soul immortal? Does providence govern mankind?’ and, he went on, ‘celui qui s’était déterminé sur quelques unes de ces questions, était d’ abord philosophe, pour peu qu’il eût de la barbe.’
