ABSTRACT

is there a final philosophy? In spite of the claims of some systematic doctrines to this monstrous title, and their shameless assumption of it, there is in fact no such thing. There cannot be, because there is no philosophy which is not a step in the historical development of philosophy, and no poem which is not a step in the historical development of poetry—we cannot conceive a ‘final poem’ which would be a substitute for all the others which have appeared and will appear in the world.
