ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the important role that mindfulness plays in Heart Led Psychotherapy, including increasing client’s awareness of when they are listening to their ego so that they can apply different techniques to let go of the ego and move into their heart and soul. First, some background research is discussed in relation to mindfulness to highlight the benefits in different client settings, groups, and ages and within the general population. This is followed by a detailed script that can be used to teach clients both informal and formal aspects of mindfulness. Teaching clients informal mindfulness is helping them to connect to the present moment throughout the day using their senses and learn how to let go of the constant bombardment of thoughts. Formal mindfulness is teaching clients a process of meditation, taking some protected time in the day to connect with what is happening within themselves at both an emotional and physical level. Additional scripts are then provided to teach clients a variety of mindful breathing, light stream meditation, heartful meditation, and soulful meditation exercises. Used correctly, mindfulness can become a very powerful resource in life, increasing client’s capacity to manage any distress and difficulties.
