ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 of ARM 4th Ed is entitled Building a Set of Items for Measurement. This chapter introduces the model for analyzing dichotomous data, which are data that have simply two values, usually 0 and 1, and includes a discussion of the distinction between numerical values, quantity, and units. We analyze data from the BLOT (Bond’s Logical Operations Test) as the exemplar for analysis according to the dichotomous Rasch model. The BLOT was derived from the extensive theoretical and empirical research of Jean Piaget. Step-by-step instructions for the analysis of the BLOT data set are provided on the book website. The Going Further section examines the problem of guessing in multiple-choice tests and how that might be detected using the BLOT.
