ABSTRACT

All villages in the tribal territory must be settled at sites selected or approved of by the Chief. When a village, e.g. the tribal headquarters, moves from one place to another, the Chief first goes with some of his advisers to survey the country for a suitable site. If owing to congestion no land at ail is available within the ward holding, the headman must obtain from the Chief a new holding for the use of his people. A homestead once built remains the exclusive property of the family occupying it; and is handed down from one generation to another. Every man in the tribe is entitled to free grazing and water for his cattle. The cattleposts are generally situated a considerable distance from the village settlements, often a day's journey or more by foot. The right to water cattle at certain drifts or pools in the rivers is confined to the people whose cattleposts are habitually located there.
