ABSTRACT

A particularly interesting Greek myth is that of Pandora and the whispering box. This can be found in most collections of Greek myths. Briefly told, the story is about a young woman, Pandora, who lives in the newly-made world, a world of joy and happiness, without pain, sorrow or disease. The Bible is made up of different types of literature which have different purposes—myths, legends, stories, prophecy, history, law, poetry, letters. It is important that children as they reach 10 years old or so should be introduced to this so as to help them to escape the trap of literalism into which they will almost certainly wander. The Book of Jonah is a more complex allegory. It is the story of a Jew whom God told to go and preach at Nineveh. The lot fell on Jonah who confessed that he was fleeing from God’s will and asked them to throw him into the sea.
