ABSTRACT

An effective way of approaching the teaching of a festival is to select a number of relevant artefacts which serve as concrete objects upon which the background stories and the ceremonies of the festival can be hung. There are many aids to teaching and learning in religious education that resourceful teachers can use successfully. There are the more obvious aids like books, pictures and charts which are multiplying year by year. In addition to these are less-used but potentially highly significant resources such as religious buildings, religious artefacts and, of course, people. All religions express themselves in some form of community and all establish some building or place where ceremonies and worship can be carried out. These buildings where the faithful meet to worship, to celebrate, to hallow the important stages of life and to teach the religion to both young and old have a very special place in the life of that religious community.
