ABSTRACT

Chapter 12 reviews the role of trained nonprofessional counselors and discusses future prospects. Nonprofessional counseling is the process of assessing and assisting a helpee to manage immediate life concerns more effectively. Nonprofessional counselors include everyday people in informal relationships such as family and friends; noncredentialed mental health workers such as mental health technicians, life coaches, spiritual advisors, and volunteers; and professionals in industries outside of mental health that involve a high degree of social interaction, such as business, education, medicine, law and public safety, government, and human services. Readers are encouraged to continue using and practicing their skills, discover their unique helping style, and consider paths for continued education and training, including options for professional helping careers. Options for jobs and future training are provided, including resources to learn more.
