ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the second main theme of the present research, namely the concept of L2 interactional competence. This concept is presented in relation to the research domain of CA-SLA. To do so, first a description of CA-SLA is outlined. In it, the main analytical objects are described, such as the reconceptualization of L2 learning, the analysis of competence, and the use of the term “L2 interactional competence.” Particular attention is paid to the (still-too-few) studies on L2 learning outside the classroom, because they represent a relevant body of literature for the research presented in this study. Finally, some challenges for CA-SLA are addressed. These are related to the increasing body of longitudinal studies that characterize more recent attempts to discuss changes of practices in accomplishing one and the same action over a longer period of time.
