ABSTRACT

After a conversational topic has been introduced, it can happen that it is also collaboratively closed during the conversation. The literature (see Chapter 4) has shown that most of the time, topics flow into one another without marked boundaries between them. Yet it is possible for a topic closure to be observably oriented toward by the interactants so that the topic at hand is collaboratively closed. This chapter deals with this type of action. Moreover, the analyses are longitudinal in nature, allowing for a comparison of the accomplishment of topic closure over time, which is presented at the end of the chapter.
