ABSTRACT

In some cases the Survey investigators made the entries on the dictation of the voluntary workers. In the Tottenham study various methods were used in the actual completion of the cards: some of the Senior Voluntary Workers preferred to fill in their own for the whole district, and others left them to the Friendly Visitors. The parents of most of the Tottenham children who had returned to their homes before December 1st, 1939, were interviewed during the first two months of 1940. Only one quarter of the Tottenham children in Cambridge were less than eight years old, whereas the proportion in the Tottenham schools is one third. Tottenham is mentioned first because the part of the survey carried out between November and February 1939–1940 was completed and reported upon separately. It consisted of individual records of 373 children, about one quarter of who had returned home by December 1st 1939.
