ABSTRACT
Each couple creating their couple sexual style is a new and critical concept. The couple sexual style is usually different than their relational style. The couple sexual style refers to how each partner maintains personal autonomy and balances that with being an intimate sexual team who integrate intimacy and eroticism. Intimacy and eroticism are different dimensions, but not incompatible or adversarial. The challenge for couples, married or partnered, straight or gay, is to integrate intimacy and eroticism.
There are four major couple sexual styles:
Complementary
Traditional
Best Friend
Emotionally Expressive
Sexually, one size never fits all. The challenge is to choose the couple sexual style which is congruent with your sexual attitudes, feelings, and values. Emphasize the strengths of your chosen sexual style and be aware of vulnerabilities so you don’t fall into common “traps”. For most couples, the best fit is the Complementary couple sexual style and the Best Friend relational style.
