ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study of Joel and Lisa. Joel (40) and Lisa (38) have been in a relationship for 18 years. Their commitment began shortly after the birth of their son, Jesse (18), and they later welcomed two more children: daughter Brittany (15) and son Julio (10). After two mandatory family counseling sessions at the addictions facility, the counselor recommended couples counseling for Joel and Lisa. At the first session, counsellors learn that the couple is bi-racial and ascribes to traditional gender roles of provider and caregiver. Both practicing Catholics, they rely on their faith and Lisa’s family of origin for guidance and support while raising their family. Joel works as an electrician and was the first in his family to pursue education beyond high school. They report a middle-class income of $65,000 a year with enough money to support their needs and some wants, while also helping family financially from time to time.
