ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to provide the “efforts to ease and enrich the lives of the other” couples can employ for the health of their relationship. This is about the sustenance that maintains relationships as a place of refuge and sanctuary. The sustaining factor of relationship health rests in partner abilities to value one another: a consistent awareness and appreciation of their loved one’s strengths and generous contributions to the relationship. Restoring and strengthening couples’ narratives of what they bring to one another and the relationship honors the very light that exists between them because of them. Counselors must listen closely and offer positive reframes to continually help couples remember what drew them together, what keeps them together, and how these qualities sustain their relationship. Positive reframes begin by giving a nod to how the very qualities that are challenges to a relationship can be the same that also sustain and support the relationship.
