ABSTRACT

The first step in the planning process is to establish teacher's goals for teaching the course, because—just as when starting on a long trip—once they know where they want to go, it is easier to plan a route that will get them there. Teachers' course goals should also take into account the role each course plays in their department and campus. Once the teacher have established the goals for their course, the next task is to decide which learning materials they want their students to use. As textbook costs and economic pressures have risen, many students find it difficult to purchase all the assigned materials in all their classes, and for them, the library is a vital link to course. Most colleges and universities require that students get a course syllabus and most instructors provide one. The structural purpose of a syllabus is to present the organization of the course and help students understand how to succeed in it.
