ABSTRACT

Chapter Two provides a detailed overview of the evolution of city planning in the United States between the 1890s and 1930s. Discussing the rise of nationally significant environmental design movements, e.g. the City Beautiful, alongside the development of zoning planning and urban design notions allied with the City Efficient, Chapter Two also presents American colonial planning influence in the Philippines pre-1916. Drawing reference to Daniel Burnham and his 1905 plans for Manila and Baguio, ultimately Chapter Two reveals, on one hand, transitions within North American city planning and, on the other hand, their impacts upon Philippine society prior to the passing of the watershed Jones Act in 1916.
