ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the methodological issues encountered, such as the description of observable indicators and the use of the grid as an indispensable research tool for teachers and music therapists studying the Flow experience in children and young people. Several studies have applied Flow theory in the field of music education, improvisation and composition. The grid allows movement from a qualitative to a quantitative observation and therefore to the measurement of the Flow experience in musical experience. In the LINK project, Flow theory and the observation grids were used to observe the impact that the training courses, for non music specialist teachers together working with music therapists on some basic principles of music and art therapy, could have in the classroom activities with children with vulnerabilities arising from their social, emotional and mental health concerns. Two LINK Flow grids were used by the LINK partners in Italy, Portugal, Poland and the UK.
