ABSTRACT

Eunice Macedo towards the end of the LINK project, teachers reflected on new knowledge, awareness and skills that had emerged. Teachers recognised the power of the arts as a positive stimulus for young people to motivate them in their learning. They understood that the arts provide access to new forms of non-verbal communication that can ensure relational experiences for young people who do not feel confident to speak out for themselves. There is evidence of teachers’ changing professional identities as they learned new ways of being and living alongside their students. The teachers are talking about new practices and being experimental with the arts in their teaching. The teachers have been stimulated to go beyond earlier professional boundaries, to explore new psychological knowledge and to fully appreciate the potential of the arts to facilitate new ways of being alongside young people with mental health concerns.
