ABSTRACT

Data was collected from teachers during interviews at the end of the LINK project following a period of training with music/arts based therapists. Listening was an attractive approach in classroom work because a diversity of musical genres could be used, from classical to hip-hop, rock, folk, etc. The teacher must be familiar with the music presented. This involves prior listening to the music in its entirety, focusing on any physical, emotional, intellectual, aesthetic or spiritual aspects it touches. In preparation for a listening activity, each student may be encouraged to find a safe space in the room to experience the music, though keeping in sight of the teacher at all times. Teachers who had been sensitised through the music/arts trainings talked of making the best use of their time with students by trying to be attentive and flexible, open and communicative including through creating safe conditions for sharing music listening together.
