ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book addresses the problem of how the United States and Japan can find solutions to their economic and trade difficulties, examines the root causes of the trade controversy, evaluates suggested solutions by both sides, and defines policies that are believed justified in light of current domestic developments in the United States and Japan and of changes occuring in the international community. It explores a second area of conflict, one with potentially graver consequences for survival of the relationship, the issue of security and the linkage of defense and trade. The book discusses some of the idiosyncrasies of Japanese politics and their profound effect on the texture and rhythm of Japan’s relations with the United States. It discusses how international strategic considerations in Asia could affect Japan’s security interests and provoke changes in its defense policies.
