ABSTRACT

A trend toward forming business alliances, joint ventures, and other cooperative arrangements among Japanese and United States (US) firms is increasingly evident as both sides strive to improve their economic fortunes and to manage the growing economic crisis. The US automobile industry has voiced few complaints recently about Japanese competition. US and Japanese companies are so closely interlocked that if one company tried to outdo the other, the industry as a whole would suffer. Mazda and Ford, Chrysler and Mitsubishi, General Motors and Toyota, are but a few examples of close industry integration. The aircraft industry has also seen cooperation between Japan and the United States. Japan and the United States are also inching toward closer collaboration in scientific projects. Diversity of attitudes toward the work ethic between young and older workers is also becoming a fixture on the labor scene.
