ABSTRACT

The accommodation-militancy continuum is the most important dimension on which minority responses differ. It provides a universal rationale for identifying four major orientations. In line with the universal rationale and the major ideological and political currents in the Arab sector, four Arab orientation types to Arab-Jewish coexistence are spelled out and identified by survey questions as: accommodationist type, reservationist type, oppositionist type, and rejectionist type. The typology's most fundamental contribution lies in its parsimonious depiction of views with regard to the major issues in Arab-Jewish relations. Since the typology is designed to consist of attitudes only, it would be more useful if it can also differentiate among behaviors. Determinants are factors that shape orientation. They are background or behaviors which predispose or reinforce the degree of militancy. The classification of determinants into four sets of predictors: susceptibility, westernization, contact, and deprivation.
