ABSTRACT
This chapter reviews the procedures used in the Arab survey. The Arabic questionnaire for Arabs was similar to the Hebrew questionnaire for Jews. Most of the questions were identical, but some were either deleted or modified to fit the situation of each group. Both questionnaires were pretested on small samples prior to the fieldwork, and vague or undifferentiating items were reworded or discarded. The sampling frame consisted of all Arab permanent localities, Bedouin encampments, and mixed Arab-Jewish towns. Data were gathered through interviewing. Interviewing procedures for Arabs were the same as those for the Jews. Each question and its possible answers were first read. The respondent was then asked to select the most appropriate answer. The presentation of all questionnaire items followed a uniform order. Representativeness of the Arab sample is confirmed by a comparison between the sample statistics with known population parameters.
