ABSTRACT
If it turns out that the human brain operates according to straightforwardly mechanical principles, then we will have no doubt at all that a machine can be conscious. Humans would then have been discovered to be machines, and humans are undoubtedly conscious. Ergo, some machines are conscious. But it is by no means clear to us how machines have consciousness. Nor is it clear how the human body can have the attribute of being conscious.
