ABSTRACT

Searle’s main concern is to remind us that consciousness is implicated in a particular way with materiality. Since the hypothesis that Consciousness-associated features are not merely associated with consciousness but are causally related to the occurrence of the consciousness emerged from an empirical test of the dissociability of consciousness from informational content, it is reasonable to suppose that one might want to match such empirical dissociability in the Cyborg. The Searlian, perhaps, will point to the attribution of consciousness to other humans hoping to elicit the intuition that the physical part of the analogy was decisive or at least an important element in the analogy. Surely the nature of the causal system is properly connected to the attribution of consciousness or mind, or would be if one discovered that there are functionally preemptive systems.
