Style as juncture of social and cultural faces is a product of history. These histories get concretized in particular art worlds. The agents include many sorts of brokers, from critics and producers to editors, but all these depend on the producing artists to generate continuing streams of art. Production through agency is not just a matter of efficiency through specialization. It also has an impact on cultural contents. Any full-blown aesthetics, a philosophy of art, has to build across many art worlds and particular rhetorics. In pragmatism as a philosophy, a philosophy distinctive to America, the aesthetic is seen as a transformation and refinement of experienced emotion that goes beyond ritual reenactment and symbolic duplication. The most significant task of embedding in the United States is of African Americans, and there will be found the greatest scope for narrative creativity and witnessing identity.
