ABSTRACT

Wretchedness of all the colonized, dreadfully aggravated by hateful racism, perhaps the cruellest sequel of slavery, which sets whites, blacks and mulattoes as well against one another. Wretchedness against which struggle is especially difficult owing to the peculiar factors created by four centuries of colonization. State formation allowed the party to debate currents, ideas, behaviour and attitudes that had had no outlet in the framework of the national liberation movement. Authoritarianism is directly linked to the thirst and ambition for power. This is not neurosis. According to Henri Lefebvre, authoritarianism comes from the habit and experience of power. As the thirst for power takes root it is installed in groups, and then in alliances. One has to mention the soldiers, who are at the centre of professional politics. They are powerful, influential and a crucial repressive force wooed by authoritarian or hegemonic forces.
