ABSTRACT

A weak country may overcome a strong country and a small country may overcome a big country. The people of a small country will certainly overcome the aggression of a big country if they dare to rise in struggle, dare to take up weapons and take into their own hands the destiny of their own country. The formal birth of a state must be viewed in light of the world system. As the international community is made up of states, the nation-state is undeniably the form of political and institutional expression to which any national liberation movement aspires. The modern African state is, according to Jean Ziegler, a trans-class formation able to mobilize a people in defence of certain common values despite the existence of antagonistic classes. The most spectacular aspect of Guinea-Bissau's independence is the fact that its proclamation was unilateral. This act by PAIGC crowns a longstanding 'unilateral view'.
