ABSTRACT

Israeli entrepreneurs also used their more developed marketing and financial networks to provide services for West Bank export of non-competitive products to European markets. West Bank industry has been characterized by its small-scale and traditional basis of organization. The majority of firms in the West Bank appear to have excess capacity since they under-utilize their facilities. Olive pressing for olive oil extraction is one of the oldest and most traditional industries in the West Bank. Hillel Frisch argues that the Gaza Strip is an important "destination for the more sophisticated products of the West Bank." The general trend of West Bank exports to Jordan was opposite that of West Bank exports to Israel; when industrial exports to Israel increased rapidly, exports to Jordan declined, and vice versa. Other important industries involve quarrying and construction materials, much of which is exported to Jordan and Israel, tourist handicrafts and motor repairs.
