ABSTRACT

The great curve of human evolution seems—though on a different level—to be returning to its point of departure, to a state of chaotic participation. Man is helplessly entangled in a net of universal relations and reciprocal reactions, which he neither understands nor controls. He is continually tormented and shaken with fear. The optimists of today still endow all-powerful production with the mission of blessing an increasing number of people with a higher standard of living. Production as a guiding principle at times runs counter even to technical productivity. Needless to say, just as production is the prerequisite of capitalism, so profit is a prerequisite of production, an indispensable link in the endless chain of production. The change of direction, of mental attitude necessarily constitutes a revolutionary act. And in many and wide circles, especially in ruling circles, there is a fear of revolution, amounting to panic.
