ABSTRACT

Thepropensityofcareersoldierstoreenlisthasbeenthetopicofmuchresearchin theAll-VolunteerForce(AVF)period.Policymakersneedtoknowhowcareersoldier retentionratesvarywithchangesinrelativemilitarycompensationandintheeconomic environment.Reenlistmentresearchhasfrequentlyinvolvedestimatingeconometric modelsofthedecisionprocess;theseestimateshavebeenusedtoanalyzetheeffectof changesinrelativemilitarycompensation,ofmajorrestructuringofthemilitarypay system,andofotherbudgetmanagementissuesontheretentionofmilitarycareerists. Mostrecently,econometricreenlistmentmodelsplayedanimportantroleintheFifth QuadrennialReviewofMilitaryCompensation(QRMC)analysisoftheimpactof changesinthemilitaryretirementsystem.
