ABSTRACT

In October 1981 Andreas Papandreou, leader of the Panhellenic Socialist movement (PASOK) was elected prime minister of Greece in an impressive victory ending more than three decades of nearly uninterrupted conservative government. This chapter discusses the participation of Greece in the NATO under the leadership of Papandreou. Papandreou is bitterly anti-American, and is also suspicious of NATO. US-Greek tensions rose as a result of the base negotiations and Papandreou's generally hostile attitude toward the Reagan administration. For example, the Greek government has protested emergency landings of US aircraft at Souda Air Base in Crete. The Greek government has also been hypersensitive to the movement of Turkish warships in the Aegean. Although the United States and Greece finally reached agreement on US access to bases in Greece in 1984, Papandreou has since announced that when the current five-year agreement expires in 1989, the lease will not be renewed.
