ABSTRACT

As far as Johnson is concerned, any alliance of Darwinian science with religious truth-claims is a contradiction in terms, and proponents of evolutionary theology should understand that they too are really enemies of genuine religious faith. Separatism provides an essential moment of clarification, perhaps, but it does not give the reader an evolutionary theology. A more important form of "theological engagement" with neo-Darwinism is evolutionary theology. Evolutionary theology claims that the story of life, even in its neo-Darwinian presentation, provides essential concepts for thinking about God and God's relation to nature and humanity. Instead of trying to prove God's existence from nature, evolutionary theology seeks to show how new awareness of cosmic and biological evolution can enhance and enrich traditional teachings about God and God's way of acting in the world. Evolution occurs, according to process theology, because a God of love is the source not only of order but also of novelty.
