ABSTRACT

The arms race between Israel and its Arab neighbors is the best known arms race in the Middle East—overshadowing the arms races in the Gulf, North Africa, and the Horn. India and Pakistan may lead the Third World in terms of a nuclear arms race, and Iran and Iraq may lead in terms of chemical weapons and missiles, but it is the Arab-Israeli arms race that sets the pace for armor, air combat, and a host of other technologies. Arab-Israeli arms race and was threatened as much by the Palestine Liberation Organization and Syria as it was by Israel. The shifts in the military balance since the 1982 war are particularly important in revealing the current nature of the Arab-Israeli arms race. Key Israeli combat and service support forces include one Lance surface-to-surface battalion with twelve launchers, and three active 203mm self-propelled howitzer battalions. Israeli has developed a reserve system that requires exceptional performance from its air force reservists.
