ABSTRACT

It was nearing midnight on June 15, 1922, when Dr. Sun, weary and worn after a heavy day's work, was getting ready for bed. Suddenly, secretary Lin Min-chi rushed in to warn him and Mme Sun to flee for their lives, General Ip Chu, Ch'en Chiung-ming's chief of staff, would stage a rebellion at midnight. Dr. Sun refused to believe this and said he would remain at his post. After repeated urgings from Mme Sun, he finally prepared to leave. As he was dressing, he heard the roar of cannons in the distance, and the noise was increasing in intensity. There was no time to lose. Dr. and Mme Sun and secretary Lin, together with the palace staff and servants, hurriedly left the palace. The latter were told to go home and await orders.
