ABSTRACT

It was on the morning of August 1, 1927, a very hot, sunny day, when Kai-shek came to Mother's home in Shanghai. He came into the house alone, leaving his bodyguards and Blue Shirt detectives standing in the courtyard. Normally it would have been a very exciting occasion to have a celebrity visit our home. Under the circumstances, however, I did not even bother to ask this uninvited guest to sit down. I looked at him and said sarcastically: "To what do I owe this visit? It is commonly said, Without a purpose, one does not go to the Great Buddha's shrine. So, your coming here today must mean that you have a favor to ask!"
