ABSTRACT

Altogether, I stayed in Hsi-k'ou village for ten days. My last outing was a trip to the famous Shih-Tao Monastery, which Kai-shek regarded as his favorite institution. This monastery, named after the Shih-Tao Mountain, is about six miles away and is inhabited entirely by Buddhist monks. It acquired its fame because a Ming emperor had visited it in a.d. 1518 and left an imperial edict there to commemorate the occasion. This was considered a rare honor.
