ABSTRACT

On the morning of my ninth day in Hsi-k'ou, Kai-shek received the long-awaited telegram from Dr. Sun Yat-sen asking him to proceed to Canton as soon as convenient to take up a position under General Ch'en Chiung-ming. Kai-shek wanted to take the opportunity to go by one of the larger steamers that traveled from Shanghai via Hongkong, and we found that the earliest departure was the SS President Taft, sailing from Shanghai at the end of the month. This gave us more than twelve days to prepare for our trip.
