ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the forms of interpersonal violence millions of people experience on the job. Interpersonal coercion exists when a woman consents to having sexual intercourse as a means of avoiding a negative consequence based on a threat. When compared to other crimes of interpersonal violence, hate crimes are more brutal, committed by a small group against a single victim, and committed by strangers to the victim. Aggravated Assault is an "unlawful attack by one person upon another for the purpose of inflicting severe or aggravated bodily injury." One study of anti-gay and anti-lesbian violence found that the vast majority of those surveyed experienced some type of victimization, such as, verbal abuse, physical assault, destroyed property, being spat upon. Despite the romanticized image of what family life ought to be, the reality is that for millions of families violence is a common occurrence.
