ABSTRACT

The political ideas of Victor Raul Haya de la Torre have resounded throughout Latin America since the early part of the twentieth century. His writings have had a profound influence, not only in his native Peru, but in every country of the continent with a substantial Indian population. Haya had been exiled from Peru a year when, as a student leader at the University of San Marcos in Lima, he and others had protested the attempt by President-dictator Augusto ? Leguia to dedicate the nation of Peru to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Haya and Leguia were players during a time of considerable turbulence in Peruvian and Latin American affairs. The literature on Victor Raul Haya de la Torre and Alianza Popular Revolucionaria Americana is immense. Both the man and the party have captured the imagination of Latin Americans and North Americans alike.
